Adam
We praise You for Your Spirit
Breathed into lifeless clay:
You carefully formed Adam,
Then Eve, his perfect mate.
Though called into Your service,
Into dark sin they fell.
Yet You foretold a Servant
Who’d rescue them from hell.

Noah
Although satanic darkness
And sin stained all mankind,
You yet kept Noah faithful
In heart and soul and mind.
He built an ark to carry
The remnant of our race.
For him, we praise Your promise
To save us by Your grace.

Abraham
For Abraham the faithful,
We thank and praise You, Lord,
He trusted in Your promise
And hearkened to Your Word.
He followed where You led him;
Your will was his delight;
May we, like him, still follow
By faith and not by sight.

Moses
We praise You for the prophet
Who led from Egypt’s hand
Your chosen people Israel
Unto the Promised Land.
We thank You, Lord, for Moses,
Whose labors harsh and long
Foreshadowed those of Jesus,
Who leads the ransomed throng.

Joshua
For Joshua the valiant,
We praise You, gracious Lord.
He captained Israel’s army
Against foul Canaan’s horde.
They crossed the Jordan safely
And toppled Jericho
Because this faithful servant
Led as You willed him go.

Gideon
We praise You, Lord, for Gideon,
This most unlikely man
Who first could not acknowledge
His role in Your great plan.
Yet once his faith was strengthened,
He led his men to fight
Against the might of Midian,
And slew them in the night.

David
A shepherd lad who loved You,
A king both bold and wise,
A prophet and a warrior,
The apple of Your eye—
For David, king and psalmist,
We praise You, mighty Lord;
We sing his psalms to bless You,
The God his heart adored.

Elijah
Elijah called Your anger
Upon the evil land—
Its king and queen and prophets,
And gods made by man’s hand.
We praise You for his valor
Before the priests of Baal.
He trusted You to save him;
Your mercy did not fail.

Elisha
We praise You for Elisha,
Who boldly spoke Your Word,
Who raised the child of Shunem
Because his prayer You heard.
His deeds foreshadowed Jesus,
Who likewise healed and fed,
Who reached out with compassion,
And gave life to the dead.

Jonah
O Lord, we praise Your mercy
Unearned—yet freely giv’n:
You saved the prophet Jonah
By grace poured out from heav’n.
Christ’s rise from death prefigured
By his from wat’ry tomb,
And Ninevah was rescued
From its deservèd doom.

Josiah
We praise You for Josiah,
The boy king who did right,
Who walked the way of David,
Prevailing in your sight.
Your house in shambles lingered,
Your Word forgotten lay,
Until his reformations
Restored a godly day.

Isaiah
Thrice-holy seraph anthems
Isaiah heard and feared,
Yet You his quailing spirit
Uplifted, healed, and cheered.
We praise You for his warnings,
And for his words of grace,
Foretelling Jesus’ coming
As Savior of our race.

Jeremiah
For Jeremiah, prophet,
We praise you, God most high.
While still a lad, You called him
Your holy Word to cry.
Though faithless shepherds scattered
The sheep of Israel,
He prophesied the coming
Of rescue without fail.

Ezekiel
We praise You for the prophet
Ezekiel, the bold,
Who warned of death for sinners
But also grace forth-told.
Through visions, voice, and actions
He called men to repent;
He prophesied Christ’s coming,
Your cov’nant to cement.

Zechariah
For godly Zechariah,
We praise Your name, O Lord—
Although at first, when hearing,
He scorned Your gracious Word.
Yet he became the father
Of John the Baptist, who
Proclaimed Your dear Son’s coming,
Creation to renew.

Opening of School
Your saints in joy assemble
To hear Your Word of life,
To be renewed and strengthened
Ere times of toil and strife.
We praise you for forgiveness,
Salvation, knowledge, peace.
Pour blessings on our teaching,
Our learning grant increase.

Baccalaureate and Graduation
We thank You, Lord, for granting
Another year of grace,
For, by Your Word and Spirit,
You’ve blessed this hallow’d place.
We march forth with the pilgrims,
The saints from bygone days.
Apostles, prophets, martyrs—
With them, Your name we praise.
