The first meeting for the 2010-2011 school year on Saturday, August 14, had 30 in attendance. Would that at every meeting 30 or more were present to carry on the business of the organization! Opportunities to sign up for participation in activities occur at the meetings, e.g., at the last meeting participants signed up for the ice cream stand and as gatekeepers. The meetings are designed for you to hear the overall activity for the year and learn how you can participate to be sure the event will be successful, enabling SOS to meet its goals.
The next meeting will be Wednesday, September 15, 7:00 p.m., at the computer lab on the second floor of Baepler Hall. Orlyn Heimsoth will be present to explain the use of computers for the students and the classroom. By the way, each month the meeting will take place at a different location to enable you to become acquainted with the rooms and equipment your son/daughter encounters in his/her education at SPLHS.
Adopt-A-Student program enables people of the greater Concordia area to have a student or two become a part of their family during the school year. You can invite the students to your home for a meal or a social evening, take them shopping, send them a treat, and in many other ways show the students you care for them and want them to enjoy your friendship. For further information and to adopt a student or two, contact Martha Brunkhorst at 660-815-2925 or SPLHS, P.O. Box 719, Concordia, MO 64020.
A few gatekeepers are still needed to take the admission at home volleyball and football games. To volunteer, contact Holly Bredehoeft at holly.clark@hotmail.com or 660-674-2210.
World Parties, as the name suggests, includes everyone in the “world.” World parties take place after each home football game. A family, two or three families, a class, or group hosts the party by providing a “main dish” such as hot dogs or hamburgers. Guests are asked to bring a snack and two 2-liter bottles of pop. We are still looking for hosts for the September 10 and October 15 games. If you are willing to host a World Party, contact Beth Schemmer at schemmer@ctcis.net or 660-584-2368.
The Concordia Fall Festival (Street Fair), September 8-11, has SOS involved. The SOS Resource Committee has a sub-committee which prepares the potato salad and sauerkraut for the meals served by the Lions Club in Heidelberg Gardens. SOS also has an ice cream stand and volunteers are needed to serve the ice cream. If you can take a shift, contact Cindy Stuenkel at rcstuenkel@centurytel.net or 660-641-3768.
Visit the new Saints Store in the remodeled lobby of Weis Gym. The store will be open for business at all volleyball games, and merchandise will also be available for sale at the football games. Saints jackets, sweatshirts, t-shirts and other merchandise make great gifts. If you would like to assist in the store, contact Karel Vogelsmeier at 660-463-2721 or Cheryl Peters at cheryl-pete@ hotmail.com; 660-493-2651.
Homecoming, September 30-October 3, will have SOS busy with decorating the campus for fall/homecoming, the homecoming bonfire and wiener roast, and the dessert auction. To assist with the decorating, bonfire and wiener roast, contact Beth Schemmer, and with the dessert auction contact Luci Mehl at lmehl@splhs.org or 660-463-7859. Participate in the dessert auction held at the homecoming banquet, Saturday, October 2, by bringing a dessert to be auctioned and/or bid on one. Details about the dessert auction will be in the homecoming mailing.
Fall Rummage Sale is October 22 and 23. Volunteers will be needed the entire week to assist people in displaying their items. The procedure is different this year. People are not to leave boxes and bags of clothing and household items at Kaeppel as in the past. A person who has items for the sale is to bring them to the annex and place them on the racks or tables. A few people will be needed Monday-Thursday, October 18-21, to direct people where to display their items in the annex. More workers will be needed for the sale on Friday and Saturday. There will be additional information in the October Parents Newsletter.
The Prayer Chain is available to advise our SOS membership of a need for prayers. This may be a prayer for yourself, your student at SPLHS, a family member, or for whomever you desire prayers. To ask the Saint Paul family to offer such a prayer, send your request to bheine@splhs.org. Should you wish your name to be added to the email address book to receive prayer requests, send your email information to Rev. Heine at bheine@splhs.org.
A SOS successful year requires your involvement! Most of the above-mentioned activities, along with others throughout the year, fund the $13,416.00 needed to complete the projects adopted to benefit students and the classrooms. Activities happen and are successful when we have parents and others volunteer their help and assistance. Please step forward and offer yourself. The person you will be helping is your student at SPLHS.
If you have SOS information to be included in the October Parents Newsletter, contact Walter Loeber at splhsalumni@yahoo.com or 660-463-2238, ext 317.
One final word: The next SOS meeting is Wednesday, September 15, 7:00 p.m., at the computer lab on the second floor of Baepler Hall.
